Platform Plumbing is one person — and a few good habits.
I'm Ben. Auckland-based, working out of Northpark in the east. The business is me, my van, and a phone I actually answer. Residential plumbing, owner-operator — the same person who quotes the work is the one who turns up to do it.
A platform is the part underneath. The thing everything else stands on.
That's plumbing in a house. You shouldn't think about it. The hot tap should be hot, the cold tap should be cold, the water should leave the building when you're done with it. When all of that's working, plumbing is invisible. When any of it isn't, your day is built around fixing it.
I called the business Platform Plumbing because that's the job: the dependable bit. The quiet bit. The bit you tell your neighbours about when they ask, “do you know a good plumber?”
The promises that hold the rest together.
I don't have a clever differentiator. I do the same things every plumber should do — and I do them every time, on every job, regardless of who's watching.
- I answer the phone. Or I call back the same hour. Same number you'd call for a quote is the one you call for an emergency.
- I quote up front. Before I start the work. The number on the invoice matches the number we agreed on, unless something genuinely changed and we both knew it changed.
- I leave the site cleaner than I found it. Drop sheets where I'm working, offcuts in the van, surfaces wiped before I go.
- I show you what I did. Photos of anything I've buried — under floors, in walls, in slabs. So in five years if something goes wrong upstream, you've got the receipts.
- I tell you the truth on repair vs replace. Even when the truth is “repair, you've got years left” and a less honest plumber would have sold you a new cylinder.
Most of it is reactive. Some of it is planned. All of it is residential.
A bit over half of what I do is reactive — the calls about hot water that's gone, drains that have backed up, taps that won't shut off. The rest is planned: bathroom and kitchen renovations, hot water cylinder replacements, drainage maintenance.
I work residential. Small commercial occasionally — a café, a small office — but mostly homes. Auckland houses, with all the personality and quirk of houses built from the 1960s onwards. Old copper, old earthenware drains, old gully traps, old habits.
What I don't take: large new builds I can't deliver inside a builder's timeline, gas work that requires a separate gasfitting certification beyond my scope, jobs more than 90 minutes from my van.
